House specialty: Chicken tikka and chips.

Nargis restaurant in Nairobi is a brand name. Started by a professional chef who learned his skills in the UK, the restaurant has stood the test of time without compromising on quality and quantity. They have two branches — one on School Lane in Westlands and the other in Industrial Area.

When my managing director William Pike mentioned the little hidden gem just round the corner from our office would make for a good review, I said why not? What I did not expect was for him to actually take me so that we review ‘together’. So off we went. Now the thought of having lunch with one’s boss is quite unsettling when you are a bunch of colleagues. Imagine my nerves when it was just him and I... Anyway I digress. We went just before lunch time so the place was still quiet and without the bustle.

For starters, Pike ordered the bhajias and beef samosas. Served on a small platter, they came fast and hot. The bhajias were crispy and not too ‘heavy with flour’ as is the norm in Nairobi. The samosas were more meat than pastry (yay) and what a delight it was to savour them.

I ordered one of Pike’s favourite meals — the house specialty chicken tikka while he asked for the mutton biryani. Not more than 10 minutes passed before the food came piping hot. As the biryani could not have been freshly made from scratch, I presumed it was already done in anticipation of the lunch hour rush. Nonetheless, that did not make it less tasty. The spices were not over-powering and the meat was well cooked and tender.

The tikka breast was fresh, juicy, well marinated and a large portion. The same applied to the accompanying fries. I could tell why Nargis is famed for having the best tikka in town.

One thing I cannot forget to mention is the Vimto drink that came with my meal. You must understand that if you are an 80s baby, the distinct red fruit beverage was the in thing.

One thing I have picked up doing restaurant reviews is that food does not always have to be served on a fancy plate to be deemed appetising. Its the simplest of meals that bring the most joy.

The other popular specialty is the pan-fried fish tikka.

A two course meal consisting of a starter and main meal will cost about Sh700.
