In a significant and commendable shift, President William Ruto has announced a new direction for Kenya’s foreign policy.
This approach, discussed during a consultative meeting, aims to adopt a ‘whole-of-government and society’ strategy, marking a progressive step in how our nation engages with the international community.
One of the most notable aspects of this new policy is inclusivity. By involving Parliament, the Judiciary, civil society and marginalised groups such as youth, persons living with disability and the diaspora, the policy ensures our diplomatic efforts reflect the diverse voices and interests of all Kenyans.
Those in the diaspora should not be excluded, as they already have the experience and network to help in implementation.
This inclusive approach is a move towards a more democratic and participatory foreign policy, which is essential for a nation striving for comprehensive development.
The emphasis on economic diplomacy is particularly noteworthy. By positioning Kenya as a regional financial hub and creating trade opportunities for small and medium enterprises, the policy aims to drive national progress and improve the welfare of citizens.
This focus on economic growth, coupled with its commitment to peace-making and peace-keeping, reinforces Kenya’s role as a force for good. Incorporating digital and climate diplomacy into our foreign policy framework is both timely and necessary.
As globalisation continues to blur the lines between domestic and international policy, we must address emerging global trends with a comprehensive and forward-thinking strategy.
This approach ensures Kenya remains relevant and proactive on the global stage. While these plans are very sober and well-conceived, it is crucial that we have a robust team to implement them effectively, including Kenyan ambassadors in different countries.
The success of this ambitious policy will depend on dedication and capability of those tasked with bringing it to fruition.
The commitment of our diplomatic corps and other stakeholders will be key to realising full potential of this policy. President Ruto’s vision for a more inclusive and effective foreign policy is a promising development for Kenya.
It is my hope this new approach will lead to tangible benefits for all Kenyans and strengthen our nation’s position on the global stage. By unlocking the power of cooperation, promise of partnerships and potential of a shared vision, we can look forward to a prosperous and interconnected future.
