National football girls champions, St. John’s Kaloleni booked a place in today’s semifinal after edging out Kenyan counterparts Nginda Girls 2-0 in their quarter-final match played at Eldoret Sports Club.
Another Kenyan side, Wiyeta Girls also sailed to semi finals after defeating Mukono of Uganda 3-0. Against Nginga, Hellen Ochieng scored a double to ensure St. John’s maintained their unbeaten run. The first half ended barren draw after both sides proved hard nuts to crack. However in the second half, Kaloleni had their luck with Ochieng opening the scores in the 53rd minute. Six minutes later, Ochieng doubled the scores to end the match 2-0.
Kaloleni team captain Mwanahalima Adams was delighted with the victory and attributed their success to team work.
“I am impressed with the progress but we expect tough semis and we will have to give our best shot,” Adams said. They face Kenya’s Wiyeta in their semis today.
In other quarterfinal matches, Nyakach of Kenya bow out of the competition after losing to GS Remera in the penalty shoot-outs. They drew 2-2 in regulation time with Remera winning 5-4 on penalties. Masaka of Uganda beat Nyakabinga 4-2 also on the penalty shoot-outs after a 1-1 draw. Masaka will face Remera in the second semi at Hill School.
