A past action between KCB and Kenya Prisons

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) League defending champions KCB are all set for the second leg of the national contest set for Nyayo Stadium this weekend.

The bankers open their campaign against perennial rivals Kenya Pipeline as Post Bank and DCI lurk in the next two days.

Twelve teams will battle out at the indoor and outdoor facilities.

They are KCB, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Pipeline, KDF, Vihiga, Maranatha, Young Spikers, Postbank, Lipalikes, Nairobi Prisons, Kenya Army and DCI.

KCB head coach Japheth Munala said: “We have an entertaining set of matches coming up this weekend and, as KCB, we are ready to face everyone. The girls are highly motivated and can’t wait to be back on the court to showcase their skills. Everyone has been working hard in training. We expect a good show.”

Captain Edith Wisa, who missed last month’s action in Nyeri due to injury, is expected back while right-attacker Pauline Chemutai is a doubt after sustaining a knee injury during training.

Munala confirmed teenage sensations Marylene Terry and setter Faith Obeko from Kwanthanze Secondary School will bolster KCB’s ranks, especially with key starter Esther Mutinda out for the season.

“We participated in the Governor Mwalimu Kahiga tournament to sharpen our claws and tick all the boxes ahead of the league fixtures. Everyone is eager to step on that court and compete. We are more than prepared to roar over the weekend,” libero Lincy Jeruto said.

KCB’s league opener in Nyeri, against Deaf Volleyball, was a cropper after the debutants failed to show up.

Consequently, the Deaf side were demoted to Division Two.

DCI lead the standings with six points from two matches, followed by Kenya Army, six points too but poor on the set difference.

Pipeline are third, a point behind the top two after two wins.

Prisons follow on four points from two matches while Defence Forces close out the top five with three points.

Vihiga, Young Spikers, Nairobi Prisons, Lipalikes and KCB are yet to secure points.

Meanwhile, Sharon Jepkosgei joined KDF after completing her Form four at Kaboson Girls’ High School. She is expected to make her KVF league bow this weekend.

The men’s league resumes on November 29 through December 1 at Nyayo Stadium.

However, KDF will miss the leg as they represent Kenya at the Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria.
