KCB coach Oliver Mang’eni insists the bankers must improve their defence despite a 38-16 drubbing of Quins in a Kenya Cup encounter over the weekend.

The win saw the bankers extend their unbeaten run to seven games, joint top alongside champions Kabras with 30 points but the Thika Road side have an inferior points difference.

Mang’eni saw his side build a big lead before nervy moments in the second half made the game competitive.

“We conceded some easy tries but we will work on tightening our defence in the next games,” noted Mangeni.

The returning Kenya Sevens players made a big difference in his side’s win.

“We had a great boost from players returning from Shujaa and we will integrate them into the team gradually. We are also giving opportunities to players who have been working hard in training, which allowed captain Jacob Ojee to take a rest day. The goal is to have all players ready for the Kenya Cup,” added Mang’eni.

With the competition entering the business end of the season, the former Kenya Simbas international said they cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

“We have entered a critical phase of the league. We have to be at our best to ensure we get a home semifinal in the playoffs,” added Mang’eni.

Quins struck first, with kicker Evin Asina converting a penalty 10 minutes into the game to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

KCB responded quickly through Elvis Olukusi unconverted as Michael Wamalwa touched down and Austin Sikutwa hit the conversion as the bankers led 12-3.

Asena added another penalty for Quins, but Andy Cole Omollo extended KCB’s lead with a well-executed try. Sikutwa converted, securing a comfortable 19-6 advantage for KCB at halftime.

Olukusi and Sikutwa added to KCB’s tally upon resumption, while Charles Kinyanjui and Dave Mwangi responded for Quins.

Holders Kabras crushed Blak Blad 62-6 to stay top of the log while a second-half surge from Menengai Oilers saw them end Nondies’ unbeaten run 34-25 in Nakuru.

South Coast Pirates beat Nakuru 17-0 for their first win of the season. Kisumu RFC edged Mwamba 25-5 while Strathmore came from behind to defeat Impala 21-14.
