Tusker FC custodian Brian Opondo, 23, is a testament to the power of resilience in the dynamic world of football, where dreams are often forged through relentless effort and unwavering determination
His call-up to the Harambee Stars marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career, a moment that encapsulates the trials and triumphs that await.
As he prepares to don the national colours once more, this time on the senior stage, Opondo’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers.
His ascent to the national team, under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, comes in the wake of a challenging season.
After battling injuries and fierce competition for a starting position, he has emerged as a key player for Tusker, boasting an impressive record of six clean sheets in just eight league matches.
This remarkable performance, coupled with the discipline and dedication he exhibited during his recovery, has solidified his place in the squad ahead of the upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifying matches against Gabon and Gambia in 2026.
Reflecting on his selection, Opondo expressed his elation, stating: “It feels great to get this call-up. This is a massive challenge and I believe it is the product of what I have been doing. Hard work pays.”
Opondo’s journey has not been without its obstacles. Upon joining Tusker from Bidco in 2022, he faced significant challenges, including limited playing time and the daunting shadow of injury.
“It was really difficult and quite a challenging time, especially with injuries coming that early in the season,” he recalls.
Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, Opondo chose to channel his energy into rehabilitation and training, demonstrating an admirable level of commitment.
“I always pushed myself and my teammates always pushed me as well,” he explained, highlighting the importance of a supportive environment in overcoming adversity.
Opondo’s experience at Tusker exemplifies this reality, as he spent nearly a season without significant playing time.
“When I joined Tusker, I stayed for almost one season without playing. But I didn’t lose my head; I kept working, knowing that anyone who passes through coach Dunco’s (Dun- can Ochieng) arms always ends up successful,” he reflected.
This perspective of patience and resilience is crucial in a sport where talent alone does not guarantee success. As Opondo prepares to enter the competitive arena of the national team, he understands the magnitude of the challenge ahead.
