Kenya Under-20 rugby side will face Tunisia in the opening match of the defence of the Barthes Cup on April 19 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Four days later, the side also known as Chipu will renew rivalry with former champions Namibia on April 24 for a berth in the final.
Head coach Simon Jawichre said they have planned a final four-day camp this week at Lenana School to get the players in the right shape and frame for the tourney.
“We have had two camps so far in Nakuru and Nairobi last month, so this is the last before we name the final 28-man squad,” he added.
The tactician said it’s going to be unlikely to play build-up matches ahead of the championship as early as anticipated, considering that the 15s season is drawing to a close.
“The season is coming to an end, and chances of getting teams to play are very slim. However, we will try our best to get the players’ match sharpness and preparation. Training alone is not enough, and we will try and see who is available to play us,” noted Jawichre.
The Catholic Monks coach expects a competitive championship with hosts Zimbabwe keen to bounce back after losing to Kenya.
“Last year, we flew under the radar and no one gave us a chance, but we proved our worth.”
Jawichre hopes the current cohort of players will be able to join Simbas or Shujaa as part of the pathway for the national team in later years.
“My hope and prayer is that a good number of these players join Simbas and Shujaa as part of their rugby pathway and development in subsequent years,” he said.
The coach is expected to name his final squad next week before departing for Harare by April 15.
