Gor Mahia strengthened their grip on the Kenyan Premier League title race with a commanding 3-1 victory over Murang’a Seal FC in an entertaining clash on Sunday.
The win extended K’Ogalo’s lead at the top of the standings, with winger Musa Shariff delivering a standout performance that repeatedly unsettled the Murang’a Seal defence with his pace and creativity.
Gor Mahia started brightly and nearly struck inside the opening minutes after winning two quick corners, but the hosts held firm to clear the danger.
Head coach Charles Akonnor said the fast start reflected his team’s intent.
“We wanted to impose ourselves early and force them under pressure from the first whistle,” Akonnor said.
The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute when Samuel Kapen fired Gor Mahia ahead after sustained pressure.
Murang’a SEAL struggled to cope with Gor Mahia’s movement on the flanks, with Musa Shariff particularly dangerous on the left.
Akonnor was full of praise for the winger.
“Musa was exceptional today. He stretched their defence and created many dangerous moments for us.”
Despite Gor Mahia’s dominance, the hosts responded well and capitalised on a defensive lapse in the 37th minute to level the match at 1-1.
Murang’a Seal coach Dennis Odhiambo praised his side’s reaction.
“I liked the response after conceding. We remained brave and found a way back into the match,” he said.
Gor Mahia almost restored their lead two minutes later, but Kapen squandered a clear chance, firing over an empty net.
The visitors continued to pile on pressure before the break. In the 43rd minute, captain Alpha Onyango delivered a dangerous corner that eventually found Frank Odhiambo, whose header went over.
Onyango said the team stayed composed despite missed chances.
“We knew chances would continue coming if we kept our composure and maintained the pressure,” he said.
Gor Mahia resumed the second half with renewed intensity and regained the lead in the 52nd minute through Musa Shariff, who finished clinically after another flowing attack.
The goal shifted momentum firmly in favour of the league leaders, with Shariff continuing to torment the Murang’a SEAL defence through direct runs and sharp dribbling.
“They punished us whenever we lost concentration, especially in wide areas,” admitted Odhiambo.
Shariff nearly added an assist in the 57th minute after a dazzling run ended with a dangerous cross that the goalkeeper punched away under pressure.
Akonnor made his first change in the 66th minute, introducing Ebenezer Assifuah for Patrick Essombe, a move that immediately added fresh attacking energy.
Gor Mahia continued to dominate territory, with Kapen and Shariff both involved in a series of dangerous attacks, corners, and crosses that kept the hosts pinned deep.
Shariff remained unplayable and again caused problems in the 73rd minute after beating two defenders and forcing another corner.
Akonnor said the winger’s confidence has been growing steadily.
“He is playing with belief and maturity. That is helping the entire team offensively.”
The decisive moment came in the 76th minute when substitute Ebenezer Assifuah finished off a flowing move to make it 3-1 and effectively seal the win.
Murang’a SEAL attempted a late response but found Gor Mahia well-organised and difficult to break down.
Odhiambo admitted the visitors’ experience proved decisive.
“After the third goal, they controlled the game very well. We tried to push forward but they remained organised.”
Gor Mahia were forced into a late change in the 85th minute when Assifuah picked up an injury and was replaced by Adu-Kwaw.
Akonnor praised his side’s game management in the closing stages.
“The mentality of the team was excellent. We showed discipline, patience and hunger, which are important qualities at this stage of the season,” he said.
Captain Alpha Onyango also hailed the team’s spirit as the title race intensifies.
“Every match is important now. We know what is at stake and the players are giving everything for the club,” he said.
