The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company has assured residents of uninterrupted water supply during the holy month of Ramadan.

With Muslims across the world set to start fasting in a week’s time, there have been concerns from residents they will not get a steady supply of water like has been the case in recent weeks.

Gawasco managing director Mohammed Dolal said the company has put in place measures to ensure all homesteads get enough water.

“We have recently purchased new pumps courtesy of the governor, this has increased the amount of water we are getting from the river. We are now able to reach more clients,” he said. Dolal spoke after an inspection tour of the water treatment plant in Garissa Township.

He said the company remains dedicated to improving water infrastructure and services.

“In areas currently facing water shortages, the company will deploy water boosters to ensure residents have access to clean and sufficient water for their daily needs. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to support the community, particularly during this sacred period of fasting and reflection,” Dolal said.

He warned those connecting water illegally and vandalising the company’s infrastructure of dire consequences. Dolal said the company has launched a smart billing system to boost revenue and improve customer service.

“We are proud to introduce our new smart billing system, a transformative step forward for our customers and operations. It is meant to enhance revenue collection, transparency and service delivery,” he said.

Dolal said the system automates billing, meter reading, SMS notifications, and payments. This, he said, eliminates paperwork, reduces errors and ensures a seamless experience for customers.

“Going forward, our customers will receive accurate bills and enjoy hassle-free payments, while we benefit from increased revenue and reduced operational costs. Our staff have been fully trained to ensure a smooth transition and we’re confident this system will curb inefficiencies and promote fairness in revenue collection,” Dolal said.

Gawasco head of laboratory Mohammed Guyo said the water had undergone through all the processes and certified to be good for human consumption. On Monday, Governor Nathif Jama assured Garissa town residents that his administration is determined to ensure residents continue enjoying a steady supply of water.

He said the provision of quality clean water across the county remains one of his priority areas under his administration.
