A family in Bungoma county says their soldier son called them before the al Shabaab attack and asked them to pray.
Paul Wamukota, 24, has been missing since the attack on the KDF camp in El Adde, Somalia, on January 15.
His mother, Alice Simiyu, told the Star yesterday the military told her on Wednesday they believed he had been killed.
He was the family’s sole breadwinner and had planned to marry after he was discharged.
“My son told me to pray for them because they feared for their lives as the enemies were nearby,” she said.
Simiyu, who is also the assistant chief of Nabukhwe B sublocation, said Wamukota joined the military in 2014.
She said he was serving in the ninth battalion at Moi Barracks Eldoret and had only been deployed to Somalia 10 days before the attack.
“He had promised to marry his fiancée whom he had not introduced to us. Where will I get my daily bread?” Simiyu asked.
She said they travelled to Eldoret Barracks and were told to wait for communication from the base.
Simiyu said they have been trying to call him but he doesn’t pick up.
“The numbers were going through but no one picked. I sent money through M-Pesa, thinking he might need cash,” she said.
