  • He said the ideals behind the National Prayer Breakfast must also make them ambassadors of peace at the grassroots.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has said that the National Prayer Breakfast is a show of how united parliamentarians are, despite representing people from diverse backgrounds.

In his opening remarks, Kingi said it symbolises how the legislators are united in serving the people, as well as their need for God's help in service to the people.

"Through this initiative, we as Parliamentarians affirm that, beyond the diversity of political opinion that we ascribe to and the different colours that symbolize our political camps, we remain one great team focused on serving the people of Kenya and acknowledging our need for God to execute this mandate," the Speaker said.

Kingi called on the elected leaders to see to it that the reflections of the prayer breakfast are not only limited to a one-day engagement in a year.

He said the ideals behind the National Prayer Breakfast must also make them ambassadors of peace at the grassroots.

"The noble intentions and patriotic ideals behind the National Prayer Breakfast should inspire us to be more than just leaders representing and articulating the interest of voters here in Nairobi," Kingi said.

"We must now adorn the mantle of ambassadors of peace, unity and reconciliation at the grassroots as we engage with the people we represent."

The Senate Speaker added that Parliamentary Diplomacy must constantly find expression in the daily undertakings of elected leaders.

"We must use every opportunity to rally our people to live in harmony, remain law-abiding and dedicated to nation-building. That, too, is our calling as elected leaders," he said.

The Senate is the official host of the 21st National Prayer Breakfast. It is themed "Hope".

Last year, it was hosted by the National Assembly.

Kingi said this year, they seek to build on the gains of last year’s Prayer breakfast.

The event accords leaders an opportunity to fellowship and break bread; reflect on the affairs of the nation; and rekindle faith in the Almighty God.
