Police flags fake poster on recruitment / NPS

The National Police Service has flagged a fake poster announcing the recruitment of police constables.

Police said the fake poster has been making the rounds on social media, calling on Kenyans to ignore it.

"Fake! Purported recruitment into the national police service," NPS said in a statement on X.

In the fake poster, they listed the entry requirements, information on the commencement of the recruitment, and how to make the application.

NPS often communicate via their verified social media handles and their official website.

The government had earlier announced that it will this year recruit at least 10,000 police officers.

Interior Principal Secretary PS Raymond Omollo noted that the National Assembly allocated a budget for 5,000 police recruits but said the ministry will engage MPs to increase funding to enable the government to double the number of recruits.

“We will work with government officials and elected leaders so that more young people are recruited to the police service,” the PS said.

The recruitment aims to bolster security nationwide, particularly in volatile regions such as northeastern Kenya. Kenya has not met the globally recommended police-to-population ratio of 1:450 as data from the Kenyan National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) estimated a ratio of 1: 688 in 2021.

The recruitment of the cadet officers was cut short two years ago over budgetary constraints.

The fresh recruits, together with their established counterparts are expected to work closely with the recently introduced National Government Administrative Officers who were brought in to ensure law and order right from the grassroots level.

The Constitution of Kenya 2010, Article 243 establishes the National Police Service, consisting of the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police Service.

It states the objectives of the National Police Service include striving for the highest standards of professionalism and discipline, preventing corruption, and promoting and practicing transparency and accountability, among others.

The independent command of the NPS is placed upon the Inspector General. The Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police Service are each headed by a Deputy Inspector General, whereas the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is headed by a Director.
