A 21-year-old herder was shot and seriously wounded in a raid on a village by gunmen in the Wamba area, Samburu County.

Police said the incident happened in the Silanko sub-location in the Nkaroni location and they are yet to know the motive of the attack.

The victim was shot and hit in the stomach by gunmen who escaped without stealing anything from him.

He was rushed to Maralal Hospital for specialized treatment.

Police said the victim was in a serious condition after the February 11 shooting.

The area has been experiencing an increase in gang-related attacks, especially from armed bandits.

On Monday, a police officer was shot and killed in the area and eight suspects he was escorting were freed in an ambush.

The attackers grabbed Constable Humphrey Oroba Angwenyi’s gun and escaped with it.

Oroba was driving a police vehicle transporting eight remand prisoners from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi police station and was in the company of two police officers who escaped unhurt.

All the eight remandees escaped in the ambush.

Gunmen who were waiting opened fire and killed Oroba on the spot forcing his colleagues to seek refuge in a bush.

The body of Oroba was found at the scene with multiple bullet wounds with his AK47 rifle loaded with 30 bullets missing.

Police said five of the suspects were facing charges of defilement, one had a case of illegal possession of a firearm and another was facing murder and robbery charges.

The eighth suspect was facing assault and grievous harm charges.

Police said on Tuesday no arrest had been made on the attackers and those who escaped.

The assailants are suspected of having known the movements of the team before staging the deadly attack and freedom of the remainder.

More personnel have been mobilised to hunt down the gunmen, police headquarters said.

The area is among those under ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift.

The operation has led to a general decline in banditry attacks in the larger north rift and other surrounding areas in the past year.
