National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has come to the defence of the cooperation between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Wetang’ula explained that the country needs everybody to contribute towards the betterment of the lives of the people of Kenya.
The Speaker said the relationship between the President and Raila is not founded on quicksand, adding that it is a solid engagement that is going to move the country forward.
“When elections come, anybody can contest. After elections these leaders have shown the country that that contest was to choose a leader. Upon choosing a leader, we close our ranks, come together a look at the future of our country and how to better the lot of its people,” he stated.
In an interview with journalists, Wetang’ula added that leaders should push for social transformation in Kenya.
“We want Kenyans to live better tomorrow than they are today, and that is the prayer of everybody,” he stated.
Ruto and Raila have trained guns at each other from opposing battlefields many times, but also joined hands and worked together when agenda, ideology, occasion, and situation demanded.
Last week, Ruto described Raila’s loss in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship race as a missed opportunity for Africa.
He noted that the continent was denied the leadership of an outstanding candidate.
Speaking at a dinner event on Saturday night, after Raila conceded defeat to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Ruto expressed regret over Africa losing the chance to be led by a distinguished leader.
Raila expressed gratitude for the support he received from Ruto in his bid.
He affirmed that he could not have asked for better support given the extensive assistance the head of state mobilised for him.
“President William Ruto did everything possible to make my
campaign a success. He gave me all the logistical support that enabled me to
travel all the length and breadth of the continent and made appointments for me
to meet leaders across the continent,” he stated.
Raila commended Ruto for running a robust campaign, to the extent that he was confident of victory.
