A Police Constable attached to the security detail of a CEO of a blue-chip company fatally shot his colleague following a disagreement as they were leaving a bar in Ruaraka, Nairobi County.
The deceased officer, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua of the General Service Unit (GSU), was with his brother when he got into an argument with another constable around 1:30 am on Saturday, February 22, near Naivas Ruaraka.
Witnesses say that the deceased, his brother, and the other constable were walking home from a club when a quarrel escalated into a fistfight. The constable then drew his firearm and fatally shot Wambua.
After the shooting, the constable attempted to flee the scene but was captured by members of the public who subjected him to mob justice.
He was later rescued by officers from Ruaraka Police Station, who were on night patrol.
He was rushed to the hospital, while Wambua's body was transferred to Kenyatta University Mortuary.
Over the years, a spike in deaths within the force has been attributed to mental health struggles.
In response, police authorities have introduced counseling services, and the National Police Service Commission has established a unit dedicated to addressing these issues.
This unit will oversee outreach programs aimed at preventing mental health crises and substance abuse among officers, officials say.
