President William Ruto has unveiled plans to modernise the popular Toi market in Kibera Constituency.
Ruto admitted that the frequent fire outbreaks in the market have greatly affected traders something that has led to huge losses being incurred.
Speaking during a visit to Kibera slums as part of his ongoing development tour of the city, Ruto announced that the government would allocate Sh500 million toward upgrading the facility.
“We are going to give you Sh500 million for the construction of this market. This Toi Market here, where there is fire frequently,” he said.
The modernisation project, he stated, will include improved infrastructure, better fire safety measures, and enhanced security to support the thousands of traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.
“We want to put up a modern market so that we can stop this fire problem once and for all,” he said.
Ruto said he had already directed the Ministry of Housing to engage the Nairobi County to ensure the construction of the project commences soon.
He was accompanied by Governor Johnson Sakaja among other elected leaders from the county.
In a separate event in the area, Ruto directed that Kenyans aged 18 and above be issued National Identification (ID) cards free of charge. The directive reverses a previously gazetted fee hike, which had increased the cost of obtaining an ID for first-time applicants from Sh100 to Sh300 in 2024.
He said the move aims to ensure that as many Kenyans as possible secure identification documents.
"I want to announce here in Kibra today that IDs will now be issued free of charge,"President Ruto declared.
"Every Kenyan should receive an ID without any form of discrimination," he added.
Earlier on, the Head of State opened the PCEA Booth Girls’ high school in Langata, and presided over the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Southlands affordable housing project.
At the school, he pledged to personally sponsor 10 vulnerable girls from each of the 17 constituencies in Nairobi County to pursue their education in the institution.
