Tahmeed Express Ltd has confirmed that six people, including its driver and the driver of a truck involved in a collision, died after one of its buses was involved in a road accident in the Kapiti area of Konza shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the bus company said several passengers sustained minor injuries in the crash involving bus KDL 079S.

It said the injured passengers received medical attention, with some treated and discharged before continuing with their journey.

“Five passengers remained under medical observation and, following discharge this morning, continued their journey aboard our 8:00 a.m. service from Nairobi to Mombasa,” Tahmeed Express said.

The company expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who died in the accident.

“We deeply regret to confirm that six people lost their lives in the incident, including our driver and the driver of the truck involved. This is an immense loss, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.

Tahmeed Express Ltd said it was working with relevant authorities as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

The company said preliminary information indicated that an overtaking truck was struck from behind by another truck, resulting in a collision with the bus.

It said it would not comment further on the cause of the accident until investigations by authorities are completed.

“We will refrain from further comment on the cause until authorities conclude their inquiries,” Tahmeed Express Ltd said.

The company added that it was in contact with affected families and would provide support where necessary.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers and staff remain our highest priority. We are cooperating fully with the investigating agencies and are in contact with the affected families to offer appropriate support,” the statement said.

The company also wished those injured a full recovery and said it remained committed to cooperating with the agencies handling the investigation.

According to police, the accident occurred shortly after midnight near the Kapiti area, a few kilometres from Konza Technopolis in Athi River sub-county.

Kalama Subcounty Police Commander Patrick Gaitirira said the crash involved three vehicles — two trailers and a bus — and that the six victims died on the spot.

“This morning we had a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at around 1.00 am. It involved three vehicles, two trailers and a bus,” Gaitirira said.

The crash triggered a rescue operation and caused a major traffic snarl-up along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
