Obstetric violence refers to the mistreatment of women during childbirth, which can manifest in various forms.
The International Confederation of Midwives says OBV during childbirth, mistreatment and violence against women who are seeking sexual and reproductive health services, are serious human rights violations.
It is also recognised form of Gender-Based Violence.
It further says that while these rights violations can affect all women of reproductive age, women from marginalised communities are disproportionately impacted.
ICM says disrespect, mistreatment and obstetric violence has an impact on women, and has been associated with birth trauma.
