East African grain markets recorded diverging trends in bean prices between May and June 2026, with Kenya maintaining the highest costs in the region while Uganda experienced a notable price surge.
Data released by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and partners in the Food Security Monitor for June 2026 highlights the cost of beans in US dollars per metric ton across select regional markets.
Kenya registered the most expensive rates for the commodity, though prices eased slightly over the two months.
Yellow beans in Kenya commanded the highest overall price, falling from $1,190 per metric ton in May to $1,152 in June.
Red beans in Kenya followed a similar downward trajectory, declining from $966 to $932 per metric ton.
In contrast, Uganda posted the most significant upward price movement. The average national cost for beans in Uganda jumped from $687 per metric ton in May to $826 in June.
Meanwhile, markets in Tanzania and Rwanda experienced minor fluctuations. Tanzania’s average bean prices remained virtually flat, moving slightly from $770 per metric ton in May to $771 in June.
Rwanda saw a slight dip, with prices slipping from $754 per metric ton in May down to $731 in June.
