Employees working in the tea industry are now set for a pay rise following the signing of collective bargaining agreement.
The agreement between Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union and Kenya Tea Development Authority will see over 8,000 workers of KTDA get a 13 per cent pay rise.
The historic event held in Nakuru was signed by KTDA employee relations manager Boniface Ayub and COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli on behalf KPAWU.
Speaking during the event, Atwoli who doubles up as the union’s secretary general said the momentous accord demonstrates the commitment of KPAWU and KTDA to enhance the livelihoods and welfare of their members.
“The wage increase is poised to have a lasting impact on the quality of life for the hardworking employees within the tea industry,” he said.
The CBA will be in force for a period of two years.
The agreement, they noted, will not only bring positive change to the employees but also for the Kenyan tea industry as a whole.
“We look forward to the fruitful implementation of this agreement and the realization of its benefits,” Atwoli said.
"This momentous event signals a new chapter in the history of industrial relations within the Kenyan tea sector."
He said it underscores the commitment of KPAWU and KTDA to better the lives of those who form the backbone of this vital industry.
KPAWU, an affiliate of COTU was established in 1963, and currently has over 200, 000 working in the agricultural sub sectors of tea, coffee and flower.
Its role is to advocate for the welfare of workers in the three sectors.
