Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has sparked a lively online debate with his proposal that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should lead the fight against miraa and muguka.

Ahmednasir suggested that Gachagua is uniquely positioned to address the issue effectively.

"No one else has the requisite mandate or expertise," he said.

However, the suggestion has been met with a mix of amusement and rejection with many laughing off the idea.

“You're asking the DP to begin fighting the Merus and Embus at a time when his hands are full fighting many wars simultaneously East to West, Mountain to the Valley,” Mohamed Dida wrote.

“He may have mandate and expertise but not the time and the will to fight Miraa and Muguka,”

Another claimed that such a task would make him even more unpopular.

"He has many fights at his disposal now, he can’t risk alienating the Embus and the Merus,” the user wrote.

Miraa is predominantly grown in Igembe North, South and Central and Tigania which is in Meru County.

Muguka, on the other hand, is mainly grown in Mbeere North and Mbeere South in Embu County.

“We support Riggy G… he should go full throttle on Muguka and Miraa,” wrote a user.

“Today president met Nyandarua leaders and Gachagua was nowhere to be seen,” Knyatha said.

On Monday, President William Ruto reversed the ban on miraa imposed by Kilifi and Mombasa counties.

He said muguka is a scheduled crop in accordance with the Crops Act 2013 and the Miraa Regulations 2023.

“With muguka having been recognised by national legislation, any other laws or orders that contradict national legislation is null and void,” Ruto said in a dispatch.

He also ordered the Ministry of Agriculture to convene a meeting with stakeholders and address concerns raised on the sale and use of muguka.

Mombasa and Kilifi counties recently imposed a ban on the sale and distribution of muguka citing health concerns.

Gachagua who has been spearheading the fight against illicit brew and drug abuse across the country recently announced the campaign has bore fruits.

During the launch of the campaign, the DP instructed the local administrators and police to work together to end the brews in their locales.

He even warned chiefs found abdicating their duties that they would face the sack.

"We have to decide whether it is the chief or alcohol that goes home and since alcohol does not have a brain of its own the chief is the one to decide," he noted.
