Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has told off Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu for insinuating that she lacks powers in the Kenya Kwanza government.
Her statement came after Nyutu, who spoke on Sunday at a church service in Kahawa West, said most of the leaders from the Mt Kenya region had either been ousted from power with those in government lacking power.
He listed the leaders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Wahome, Senior Economic Advisor to the President Moses Kuria and former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi.
“It cannot be that all these people now are at peace with the government,” he said.
Nyutu claimed Kuria’s position as an advisor was a demotion from the position of Cabinet Secretary.
“And I dare say this, that though Alice Wahome is the CS, she has no power in that ministry. All the power is with the Principal Secretaries and they have no regard for her,” he added.
In a response on her X account, however, Wahome said she is more interested in service delivery and not power.
“I have watched you on a church platform talking about ‘power.’ I am more interested in service delivery and governance and not power,” she said.
“I don’t know who sent you to talk about me but kindly do not drag me into your politics.”
She made the tweet while in Baku, Azerbaijan for Cop29, where she is set to hold several high-level meetings on behalf of the country.
The remarks on power come amid murmurs that the Mt Kenya region has been sidelined in the Kenya Kwanza government, especially following Gachagua’s ouster.
A section of leaders from the region have decried that despite helping the President get votes from the area, the region is yet to benefit as expected.
There have also been allegations of plans to kick out of office more leaders allied to Gachagua.
Addressing Ruto, Nyutu said it cannot be that those who supported him are “banned”.
“There is a problem somewhere with your advisors Your Excellency,” he said.
Gachagua, who was present at the service, on his part accused Ruto of betrayal.
Gachagua said they will never again bank their trust in some leaders.
