MPs approve nomination of Mohamud as EACC CEO

Members of the National Assembly have approved the nomination of Abdi Ahmed Mohamud as the next Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chief executive.

This is after the National Assembly on Wednesday approved the motion to adopt the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) report that recommended his approval.

Mohamud is currently serving as the deputy CEO of the anti-graft body.

Once appointed by President William Ruto, he will become the third EACC chief executive officer, replacing Twalib Mbarak, whose tenure comes to an end in January.

Mohamud faced the Tharaka MP George Murugara-led committee on Tuesday for vetting.

“That taking into consideration the findings of the committee on the vetting of the nominee, this House approves appointment of Mohamud as the secretary and CEO of the EACC,” the report reads.

Mbarak, who is a former military intelligence officer took over from Halakhe Waqo whose Six-year term ended on January 10, 2019.

Mohamud has served in various capacities within the commission, including as Director of Investigations.

He holds a Master’s degree in Security Risk Management from the University of Leicester and has received training from prestigious institutions such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Israel's Central Institute of Intelligence, and Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau.

Before his current position, Mohamud served as the Director in charge of Investigations at the EACC for over a decade, overseeing high-profile cases and leading various investigative initiatives of the commission.

His journey in law enforcement began in 1989 when he joined the Kenya Police Service as a Cadet Inspector.

In 2005, he transitioned to the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), which later became the EACC, initially taking on the role of Senior Officer in charge of the Rapid Response Division (RPD) and progressively advancing to lead the Directorate of Investigation

Mohamud’s endorsement followed a heated debate where several legislators praised his qualifications, experience, and integrity.

Others referred to him as the right candidate to lead the fight against corruption in in the country.
