Police have recovered 100 goats that had been stolen from Lochacha Village in an operation conducted on Tuesday.

The National Police Service in a statement on Wednesday said the operation also led to the recovery of one AK-47 Assault Rifle, one magazine, and 11 ammo.

The multi-agency security team in Loyapat conducted an operation at Namakat Village within Katilu Location.

''The goats which were stolen from Lochacha Village last week by suspected bandits were later handed over to the rightful owner at GSU Camp in Kainuk,'' the statement reads.

According to NPS, the livestock was handed over in the presence of a multi-agency security team including NGAO members from Sarmach and Lochacha.

Since its formation in 2023, Operation Maliza Uhalifu police-led multi-agency team has made tremendous progress including a significant reduction in banditry attacks in the North Rift and Eastern regions.

KDF and NPS helped to ensure that security in those regions was good.

The government declared some parts of the regions as "dangerous and disturbed areas".

They include Baringo, Laikipia, Samburu, Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Meru and Isiolo.

NPS said that so far, a total of 241 illegal firearms and over 15, 345 animals have been recovered.

At least 272 persons have been arrested ensuring the safety of the region is in place.

Life has gone back to normal and the day-to-day activities can happen. Learning in the region has resumed too.

In March last year, the then Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki vowed to ensure normalcy is restored in the regions.

"Occasional attacks in the areas contiguous to the Turkana-West Pokot border and at a few points near Kenya's border with Uganda and South Sudan remains an outstanding assignment which the Government aims at addressing," he said.

Turkana has always been an area prone to high levels of insecurity.

Kindiki noted that attacks in the region happened quite often and the government had to deal with this issue.
