Nandi Senator Samson Cheragei now says President William Ruto will be re-elected with over 80 per cent of votes cast should he have the support of former Prime Minister and long-time Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking at the Senate on Wednesday, Cherargei said he is confident of Ruto's victory in the event a deal is sealed between the two.
“I want to assure you with the support of Raila Amollo Odinga, William Ruto will be elected by over 80% for his re-election,” he said.
His remarks come even as speculations are rife that Raila and his camp will continue to work with Ruto's Kenya Kwanza government.
Cherargei said those opposing President Ruto will not be left out after losing the 2027 election adding that they will be accommodated once the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco) report is operationalised.
He said once that is done, those in opposition will have a budget from the government, including offices and vehicles to use unlike it is today.
The Senator that the opposition will also have the chance to criticise the administration of the day from within Parliament and not just shout in funerals and markets as it is currently.
“We are even pushing for the enactment of the position of official leader of the opposition. I am telling them (the opposition) there's already a seat where people like George Wajackoyah, Kalonzo Musyoka and the rest will lose after the re-election of Ruto.
“We will finance them, give them an office, and official cars and ensure they sit either in the National Assembly or Senate and that is the Nadco report we are proposing. No one will lose, we hate to see people shouting from funerals, we want them to criticise the government from parliament.”
On Monday, Cherargei called for the formation of the office of Prime Minister as stated in the Nadco report and to have Raila serve the country in that capacity.
He insisted that the former PM’s experience and leadership should not be allowed to waste away.
"We must now fully implement the NADCO Report by amending the Constitution 2010 to create the office of the Prime Minister (PM) and allow Baba Raila Odinga to serve Kenyans in that capacity,” Cherargei said.
The Senator noted that doing this is the only way Kenya can reward Raila for his role in championing democracy and the rule of law.
“We cannot allow such brilliant leadership and experience to go to waste the way the Africa Union did it.
“This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in Kenya.”
