The recent African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson election has sparked controversy, not only due to Raila Odinga’s candidature but also because of the reaction from some Kenyans.

The recent celebrations by a section of Kenyans over Raila’s failed bid have been met with sharp criticism, with stakeholders calling for national unity instead of divisive politics.

Speaking in Kisumu on Saturday, the stakeholders from different sectors castigated the celebrations, terming them as unpatriotic and detrimental to national cohesion.

They emphasised the need for all Kenyans to rally together for the country’s development instead of perpetuating political animosities.

“I never thought I would one day see President William Ruto support Raila Odinga, given their history of political differences,” George Okwach, a local businessman said.

Okwach noted that Ruto's support shows that politics can be about more than just rivalry, it can be about uniting for a greater cause.

"It is disheartening to see others celebrate his loss instead of focusing on what this means for our national progress.”

He appealed to Kenyans to embrace unity and stop engaging in divisive politics that could derail the country's development agenda.

According to Austine Ochieng, Boda Boda Chairman Kisumu Central Constituency, Raila represents hope for many of them.

He said if President Ruto sees that too, then maybe there’s hope for the country.

This unexpected collaboration between the two leaders has sparked discussions about a potential shift in Kenya’s political dynamics.

Many residents hope that the spirit of unity demonstrated in the AUC election will extend beyond politics and translate into tangible development in Kisumu and other regions.

President Ruto’s backing of Raila in the just-concluded AUC election is set to evolve the local political landscape ahead of the 2027 General elections.

As the country moves forward, stakeholders continue to urge all Kenyans to set aside ethnic and political divisions and focus on a united front that prioritizes national growth and prosperity.
