Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni now says that the current confusion in the opposition will guarantee President William Ruto a second term, if not addressed.
Speaking on NTV, Kioni said there are currently two factions in the country's ruling party UDA and main opposition party, ODM.
He explained that while one faction of UDA remains supportive of the current regime, the other faction has its support fully behind impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kioni added that the same is true with ODM, where one faction remains opposed to the current regime, while another insists that they will work with President Ruto in 2027.
“As we sit today, we have what I may call ODM B, you can clearly see some two very vicious groups in ODM. You can see you have ODM A and ODM B. B has decided that it is supporting the current regime come 2027 and A is completely at variance with that. When you go to UDA, there is UDA A, which is stuck with the government and UDA B stuck with Gachagua and you can now see opposition B is trying to play opposition politics and they are in government.
“We have ODM B seated in opposition but trying to play government. These two units ODM B and UDA B, if I was seated in State House it's good music because those are the ones likely to guarantee William Ruto a second term,” he said.
Asked where he stands in the factions, Kioni said he remains keen not to join the current regime.
He said that if the confusion is not addressed soon, Ruto will have it easy into a second term in 2027.
“I am not in any of those and I was not wearing Sufuria because I had any intention of getting anywhere near that. It's very clear in my mind if this confusion they have brought into the opposition continues that is a way of giving another five-year term to the sitting President.”
This comes against the backdrop of the recent working arrangement between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The two leaders who faced off in the 2022 general elections agreed to work together after the anti-government Gen Z protests.
The government also fully supported Raila’s bid to become the African Union Commission chairman unsuccessfully.
