At least six people were shot dead and eight others seriously injured in a cattle raid incident in Baragoi, Samburu County.

Officials said up to 700 livestock were stolen in the attack in Samburu North.

Area Deputy County Commissioner Samwel Mwangi said multi-agency teams managed to recover about 150 animals from the attackers.

He added the teams were pursuing the attackers for more recoveries.

He said armed raiders stormed a settlement in Kilepoi area and opened fire before driving away the livestock.

The injured were rushed to Baragoi and Samburu County Referral Hospital for treatment while security agencies assess the extent of the damage.

Bodies of the victims were taken to Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal where post-mortems will be conducted.

County head of health services Dr Josephat Lenguris said the injured were in stable condition.

“They are injured but they are all stable,” Lenguris said.

Baragoi residents remain tense following the latest attack.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said they had sent more personnel to the ground to pursue the gang following the Tuesday morning attack.

Locals held protests over the incident while demanding swift government intervention to curb escalating cattle rustling and insecurity in the region.

A similar protest was staged in the area last month with local leaders demanding action to address the menace.

The area is the same one where more than 40 police officers were killed by bandits in a siege in 2012.

This prompted police operations that saw a reduction in similar crimes there.

Last month, a police officer was shot dead before being robbed of his gun in an ambush by gunmen in the Marti area, Samburu County.

Constable Humphrey Oroba was among a group of police officers who were on Monday, February 10 escorting a group of remandees from Maralal GK Prisons when they came under attack.

The officers from Baragoi Police Station had picked up eight remandees from the prison and were to take them to the station ahead of planned court sessions on February 11 when they were attacked.
