Three motor vehicles were burnt during protests in Mukuyuni Market in Kaiti, Makueni County.

The vehicles, which included a truck and two tractors, were set ablaze by members of the public protesting the death of a boda boda operator in the town on Friday.

The protesters claimed that a vehicle they associated with a trader in Mukuyuni was involved in an accident in which the rider was knocked down.

The rider later died from injuries reportedly sustained in the incident.

They barricaded the Wote–Machakos Road, bringing transport along the route to a standstill. Business also ground to a halt in the satellite town located in Kaiti Sub-county.

In addition to the motor vehicles, the protesters also set fire to other property in the town believed to belong to a businessman.

Eyewitnesses said the property destroyed was worth millions of shillings.

The protesters engaged police officers in running battles for the better part of the day.

They hurled stones and lit bonfires using tyres along the road.

The protesters reportedly overwhelmed police officers from Mukuyuni Police Station during the prolonged demonstrations.

The area police command called for reinforcement from officers based in Wote, the county headquarters, as well as nearby Kilala Police Station.

The situation, however, had calmed down by the time this story was published.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
