The law permitting the use of mealworm powder in food products, now in effect in the European Union, is a result of the West’s sanctions on Russia, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stated in his Telegram channel.
"A new EU regulation, allowing the use of mealworm powder in the food industry, has come into effect. <...> This is essentially the consequence of the Western policy of sanctions against our country, which led to economic disruption, shutdowns in industries, and significant problems in agribusiness," he explained.
The EU has opted to replace products from local farmers with mealworm, now that it has approved insect powder to be used in bread, cheese, and pasta, Volodin added.
"And nobody in Europe worries whether the consumption of insects can cause serious diseases," he argued.
Meanwhile in Russia, "only animals and fish are fed with larvae, insects, or worms," Volodin said as he invited his followers on Telegram to make their own conclusions.
