Gor Mahia FC head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has hailed his charges after overcoming a tough Talanta challenge to record a hardfought 3-2 win at Dandora Stadium on Wednesday.
Sylvester Owino fired K’Ogalo ahead in the 15th minute but a spirited battle saw Talanta restore parity through Evans Osoro in the 22nd minute. Austin Odhiambo restored Gor’s lead in the 36th minute before Geoffrey Ochieng made it three.
“It was a tough battle but we are glad we got all the three points. It’s been a fine run for us and we intend to maintain the momentum,” he said.
“There are certain weak spots we’ve noted and we shall be working on them in the coming days to ensure we are ready for our next opponents,” he said.
The win moved Gor to fourth place on the KPL log with 17 points, five adrift of leaders KCB. Meanwhile, Kenya Police head coach Etienne Ndayiragije was over the moon after his charges bounced back from a heart-wrenching 1-0 loss to AFC Leopards to register a 3-1 win over Nairobi City Stars at Dandora Stadium on Wednesday.
The win, the second of the season, steered the law enforcers from the bottom of the table to 13th. Clinton Kinanga opened the floodgates in the 14th minute before Marvin Nabwire latched onto a splendid through pass to double the advantage just five minutes before the breather.
Eric Zakayo then struck in the second minute of added time to hammer the final nail into City’s casket. Japanese import Yuto Kusaba scored a consolation for City Stars in the 38th minute.
Ndayiragije said they exhibited great character and remained faithful to the script throughout the encounter.
“The win makes me happy and I’m satisfied with the outcome. It came at a time we were experiencing doldrums occasioned by the string of losses we previously suffered, especially the one against AFC Leopards a few days ago,” he said.
“Our goal is to step on the gas pedal and ensure we secure maximum points from our subsequent matches. We can’t talk about our chances at the title just yet but it would be a mistake to rule us out. The competition is still at the tender stages and anything can happen as the season gains momentum.”
As the Burundian gaffer celebrated his first win on Kenyan soil, his opposite number, Leonard Odipo, rued squandered opportunities.
The loss left them third from bottom. “It’s not the kind of score-line I expected. We should have done better and we can only blame ourselves for what befell us here,” he said.
Kisii-based side Shabana rallied from a goal down to play out a one-all draw against Posta Rangers at Gusii Stadium.
Shami Kibwana fired the mailmen into the lead in the 40th minute only for Bonaventure Michira to
ruin the party with an equaliser in
the 79th minute.
