AFC Leopards Kelly Madada tries to dribble past APS Bomet players/HANDOUT

Gor Mahia were officially crowned 2025/2026 SportPesa Premier League champions on Sunday without kicking a ball after bitter rivals AFC Leopards suffered a devastating 2-1 defeat away to APS Bomet at Kericho Green Stadium.

The dramatic result handed K’Ogalo a record-extending 22nd league title with a match in hand, ending Leopards’ emotional title chase heartbreakingly after nearly three decades of waiting.

What was expected to be a tense title-race showdown quickly turned into a brutal lesson in pressure, composure, and missed opportunity as APS Bomet produced another fearless display to stretch their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

“We created clear chances early on but failed to punish them,” AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani admitted after the match. “At this level, if you waste opportunities, your opponents grow stronger mentally and eventually punish you.”

The opening exchanges belonged largely to Ingwe. In the 10th minute, captain Victor Omune produced aggressive pressing deep inside the APS Bomet penalty area and nearly stole possession from the goalkeeper inside the six-yard box before James Kinyanjui’s dangerous delivery from the left was eventually cleared.

Leopards continued probing. In the 22nd minute, Kayci Odhiambo stepped up for a dangerous free-kick at the edge of the box, but his effort drifted narrowly off target. Moments later, APS Bomet earned a free-kick in a similarly threatening position, only for Leopards’ defensive wall to block the attempt.

By the half-hour mark, the contest had turned physical and tactical, with both sides struggling to carve out clear opportunities despite the frantic atmosphere inside Kericho Green Stadium.

“We knew AFC Leopards would come with desperation because the championship was on the line,” APS Bomet coach Sammy Omollo said after the match. “Our job was to remain disciplined, absorb the pressure, and attack the spaces they left behind.”

Leopards nearly broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Kinyanjui whipped in a beautiful cross from the right wing, but Omune’s glancing header rolled harmlessly wide for a goal kick.

The visitors kept pushing before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Tyson Otieno danced past defenders at the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful strike that was blocked. Omune reacted quickest to the rebound, but APS Bomet’s goalkeeper produced another crucial stop to keep the score level.

“We were surviving difficult moments early in the match,” Omollo admitted. “But every missed AFC Leopards chance gave our players more belief that we could hurt them later.”

The second half resumed with Ingwe still searching nervously for the breakthrough. In the 56th minute, Kinyanjui floated in a corner kick that drifted long and out of play before Kelly Madada tested the goalkeeper two minutes later with a fierce long-range effort that was pushed away for another corner.

Then came the moment that shattered AFC Leopards’ title dream.

Exactly on the hour mark, a costly midfield mistake exposed Leopards defensively. APS Bomet launched a lightning-fast counterattack, and striker Philip Wasai raced through before calmly firing past the goalkeeper in the 60th minute to give the hosts a stunning 1-0 lead.

“Seeing the players lose composure after conceding was painful,” Ambani confessed. “Pressure can either build you or destroy your structure, and unfortunately, it destroyed ours today.”

The goal transformed the entire mood of the match. Leopards became frantic, abandoning tactical discipline in desperate pursuit of an equaliser while APS Bomet grew increasingly dangerous on transition attacks.

“In football, pressure belongs entirely to the team chasing the title,” Omollo observed. “APS Bomet played with freedom because they had nothing to lose, and that freedom made them lethal.”

APS Bomet struck again in devastating fashion before the final 20 minutes. Wasai completed his brace after another quick attacking move caught Leopards exposed defensively, sending the home supporters into wild celebration as the scoreline moved to 2-0.

By the 71st minute, Ambani responded with a quadruple substitution, bringing on Koloti, Sichenje, Otieno, and Waswa in place of Tyson, Nyongesa, Kinyanjui, and Omune as Ingwe desperately searched for a route back into the contest. “We had to make forced tactical changes because several key players are currently struggling physically,” Ambani explained. “Those disruptions affected our original structure and limited what we could execute.”

Despite the changes, APS Bomet remained composed and compact defensively. Leopards only managed to pull one back in the 87th minute through a late own goal after sustained pressure inside the penalty area. But the comeback arrived too late.

The final whistle confirmed a crushing 2-1 defeat for AFC Leopards and mathematically sealed Gor Mahia’s championship triumph, with K’Ogalo now sitting on 68 points compared to Leopards’ 64. “Losing the title this way hurts deeply because we fought so hard throughout the season,” Ambani admitted. “But consistency defines champions, and unfortunately, we dropped crucial points at the wrong time.”

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia’s own scheduled fixture against Mara Sugar FC had earlier been suspended following a Sports Disputes Tribunal ruling over venue disagreements, meaning the title was ultimately decided hundreds of kilometres away in Kericho.
