Wetang’ula leads lawmakers in condoling with Cheptumo’s family

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula led a delegation of legislators and the Parliamentary Service Commission in condoling with the family of late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo at his Nairobi home.

Wetang’ula stated that the country had lost a dedicated public servant who heavily contributed to Kenya’s legislative landscape.

He described the late senator as a humble man with strong family values, and expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Cheptumo’s long-standing service to the nation.

"Fellow Kenyans, we have gathered here as the Parliamentary Service Commission and the National Assembly at the home of our departed colleague, Baringo Senator and former Baringo North MP," Wetang'ula said.

"We worked with him for many years, and have come to condole with his family. We stand here with his widow, children, and fellow parliamentarians who have joined us in mourning his loss," the speaker said.

Wetang'ula, who is the chairman of PSC stated how difficult Cheptumo’s death was to the 13th Parliament which has also been thrown into mourning following the passing on of Malava MP Malulu Injendi who succumbed after a short illness.

"This week has been a difficult one for Parliament, with a dark cloud hanging over us following the passing of two of our members in quick succession; the Member of Parliament for Malava and the Senator for Baringo. As Parliament, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of our departed colleagues," he added.

Cheptumo, a lawyer by profession, had a remarkable career in public service.

He served three terms as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North before being elected Senator in 2022.

During his tenure, he chaired critical parliamentary committees, including the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) and the Committee on Delegated Legislation, which are key to shaping Kenya’s laws.

"The late Cheptumo distinguished himself as a diligent legislator who paid great attention to detail. As a lawyer, dedicated significant time to reading and advising fellow legislators on how to enhance legislative proposals," said Wetang’ula.

The late senator, passed away on February 16, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

The late senator’s burial is scheduled for March 1, 2025, at his Bartabwa Ward home village in Baringo County.
