Kenya’s budget cycle for the 2026/27 financial year is set to formally begin after the National Treasury confirmed the date for the presentation of the Budget Statement in Parliament.

The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, John Mbadi, has approved the formal notice indicating that the Budget Statement will be tabled before the National Assembly on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at 3 pm.

The notice, dated, May 21, 2026, serves as a formal public notification ahead of one of the most significant events in Kenya’s economic calendar, which outlines the government’s spending priorities, revenue plans and borrowing strategy for the coming financial year.

"The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Hon. FCPA John Mbadi Ng’ongo, EGH, has approved the formal notice for the FY 2026/27 Budget Statement," the statement read.

Once presented, the Budget Statement will mark the official start of parliamentary scrutiny of the 2026/27 fiscal framework, including debate on taxation proposals and expenditure allocations that will later be enacted through the Finance Bill and Appropriation Bill.

The annual budget process is guided by the Constitution (2010) and the Public Finance Management Act, 2012, and follows a structured cycle beginning with policy formulation, budget ceilings and public participation before culminating in the mid-year budget presentation in Parliament.

By this stage, the National Treasury and the National Assembly will shift focus to legislative debate and approval processes that determine how public funds will be raised and spent in the new financial year starting July 1.

Earlier in the cycle, Parliament approved the Budget Policy Statement, which set spending ceilings and priority areas for the 2026/27 financial year, guiding sector allocations and fiscal planning across government departments.

The upcoming budget is expected to be the fourth under the Kenya Kwanza administration, with the overall expenditure projected in the range of Sh4.6 trillion to Sh4.8 trillion, alongside continued emphasis on fiscal consolidation, revenue mobilisation and debt management.

The Budget Statement will be delivered by CS Mbadi, who was appointed to head the National Treasury in August 2024, and is expected to outline key economic policy directions for sectors including education, infrastructure, health, agriculture and security.
