He explained that both Kenyan and Ethiopian authorities are collaborating to address the border issues.
“As of now, meetings are ongoing to come up with solutions to the border issues, and we are working together with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to make sure that we resolve that issue,” Murkomen said.
He was speaking on Sunday at Ngoron Full Gospel Churches of Kenya in Tiaty, Baringo County, during a church service and peacebuilding meeting.
Murkomen reassured Kenyans that the government is focused on resolving the issues between the Kenyan and Ethiopian communities living at the border.
“There should be no cause for alarm. We will do what needs to be done to keep our people safe and to make sure that we restore law and order in the border,” he said.
“At the moment, calm has returned in the area, and we are trying to ensure that there is law and order in that particular part of our country.”
In a statement Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said the Turkana County Security team, in collaboration with Ethiopian security authorities, is on the ground to verify reports and take the necessary action in accordance with the law.
He urged the affected communities to remain calm and refrain from any actions that may escalate the situation. Kanja assured that they remain committed to maintaining law and order.
On Saturday evening, a clash occurred between Turkana and Dassanach fishermen at Lopemukat Common Waters, which lies along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
At least 20 fishermen were killed in an attack by gunmen believed to be from Ethiopia at the Todonyang border, Turkana County.
An unknown number of villagers were injured in what police suspect was a retaliatory attack by a Dassanech gang.
Some of the injured were evacuated, officials confirmed. Authorities said that security teams are on the ground to gather more information on the attack.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati stated that more personnel had been deployed to the area to ensure the safety of the locals.
“We are waiting for more information on the attack,” Ombati said.
