Eight Kenyan Premier League clubs have demanded a say in the Football Kenya Federation presidential elections on December 7.

The clubs want to vet the presidential aspirants after which they will back one. This decision follows a crucial meeting held on Thursday, attended by representatives and chairmen from the eight clubs.

They include AFC Leopards’ Dan Shikanda, Tusker FC’s Charles Gacheru, FC Talanta’s James Theuri, Mathare United’s Jecton Obure, Police FC’s Chris Mmbwanga, Shabana FC’s Jared Nivaton, Posta Rangers’ Gichuki Njeru, Gor Mahia’s Gerphas Ogola.

Absent with apology were Kakamega Homeboyz, Ulinzi, Mara Sugar, Sofapaka and Bidco. Speaking for the group, Gacheru emphasised KPL’s intent to scrutinise the aspirants’ vision for Kenyan football before endorsing any.

“We plan to sit down with each aspirant to understand their vision for the game. Our judgment will be based on how their agenda benefits not only the Premier League but also the wider football ecosystem, including grassroots development,” Gacheru stated.

“On Monday all the candidates will hand in their papers to the electoral board. Early November, we shall know the final list and this caucus shall speak in one voice in terms of who we will support.”

Integrity and financial management are key qualities the clubs will look for in the next FKF president.

“We need someone who can handle funds from Fifa and the government with the highest level of integrity. This is not just about football — it’s about finding someone who genuinely cares for the sport,” Gacheru noted.

The clubs highlighted the need for a strong top-flight league to support other competitions like the National Super League (NSL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

“The Premier League is the engine that can drive change, attract billions in sponsorships and generate revenue for all levels of football in Kenya. Our women’s league, for instance, should be stronger. Globally, women’s leagues are thriving, but we only have 12 teams. We need support for them,” Gacheru remarked.

Shikanda said they are looking for a candidate unafraid of challenging the county administration as well as the government to develop football.

“We want a candidate who will call different governors and the government to invest in our football. Why do we have a strong economy and key institutions like football are languishing in poverty,” he quipped.

“It has to start with the federation and the top-tier leagues.” They said this is the first of many meetings as they aim to foster unity and work towards a shared vision for the future of football.

“For too long, KPL has lacked cohesion and that’s on us. We’re changing that and these meetings will become the norm as we work together to address the challenges we face,” Gacheru concluded.
