KCB head coach Patrick Odhiambo is bullish that his side can extend their unbeaten streak in the Kenya Premier League when they clash with Mathare United on Sunday at Police Sacco Stadium.

Currently sitting top of the table with 17 points from seven games, the Bankers, along with Kenya Police FC, remain the only unbeaten sides in the league.

Closely following are Kariobangi Sharks in second with 12 points, and newcomers Mara Sugar in third with 11.

KCB’s season has featured five wins and two goal-less draws against Kariobangi Sharks, in their season opener and Gor Mahia.

Odhiambo reckons solid preparation is key to maintaining their lead at the summit.

“We will have to do sufficient preparations in the week so we can record good results in our game against Mathare,” Odhiambo said.

However, Odhiambo was quick to stress the need for caution, urging his players not to underestimate the Slum Boys.

“Mathare will provide a tough test for us. Looking at their current position, I know they will be fighting to move up the standings,” he said.

The Slum Boys currently hold eighth place, with two wins, two draws and three losses from their opening seven matches.

Recent history favours KCB, who did the double over Mathare with a 2-1 and 1-0 win during the 2022/23 season before Mathare’s brief relegation.

In their last league outing, KCB edged Tusker 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, thanks to a Francis Kahiro brace and a 62nd-minute strike by James Kinyanjui.

Ryan Ogam netted both goals for Tusker in the second half of the clash.

Reflecting on the Tusker match, Odhiambo praised his squad’s resilience and was pleased to come away with no injuries.

“I’m thankful we managed to win and even more so that we didn’t suffer any injuries,” he remarked.

He, however, acknowledged the toughness of the match.
