Newly appointed DCI head coach Jeremiah Mukopi targets a top three finish in the 2024/25 Kenya Volleyball Federation national league.
Mukopi, a former GSU libero, takes over from Patrick Sang, who was holding brief following the death of then coach Daniel Bor in April.
Mukopi joined the DCI squad after serving as an assistant coach at Equity Bank men’s club.
His coaching experience spans various levels, including stints at Tetu High School, Mautuma Secondary School and Kwanthanze Secondary School.
An optimistic Mukopi said he sees his recent appointment as an opportunity to mentor the team and help them contend for titles.
“I’m excited to be part of the DCI family. This is a new chapter and I hope to help the girls develop their skills and compete for titles,” he said.
“It won’t be easy, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
DCI opened their season with six points after two wins after beating Young Spikers 3-0 (25-04, 25-05, 25-08) and Maranatha (25-02, 25-05, 25-03).
Despite the strong start, Mukopi said he remains cautious, acknowledging the competitive nature of the league.
“We look to bounce back regardless of the stiff competition. We want to bring back our name to where it has always been. Our target is top three and it’s all possible if we can put our mechanism in place, having opened the season with a victory,” he said.
Mukopi outlined an ambitious plan for the season, emphasising skill development, defensive strength and quick transitions as they gear up for the challenge ahead.
“We have watched all teams play and we have a clear plan of what we want to do. We hope to put our best foot forward as we work our way up,” he said.
Mukopi said he hopes to make established teams like KCB, Kenya Prisons, and Kenya Pipeline sweat as he tries to build a cohesive unit that can compete with the best.
DCI will be joined by other men’s and women’s teams, as the league gets back in action on November 22 at Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi after their October 31 debut at the Kamukunji grounds in Nyeri.
The venue changes are in line with the
KVF plan of having to feature the games
both indoors and outdoors to give the
players a tip of what to expect in both
regional and global championships.
