KCB head coach Oliver Mang’eni is worried by the threat posed by Nakuru ahead of their Kenya Cup showdown at the Lions’ Den in Ruaraka on Saturday.

The bankers, who will be chasing their fifth win of the season currently lead the standings on 20 points same as champions Kabras and title-chasing Menengai Oilers but with a better points difference.

“We know for sure Nakuru will come at us in the strongest way possible. We, therefore, need to be on top of our game and maintain concentration throughout the match to stay in the lead,” said Mang’eni.

He noted: “We are having an excellent run of games but we need to improve in certain areas, especially, our defence and attack. I trust my players and I am certain we are ready for the duel on Saturday.”

The tactician is expected to make minimal changes in the squad that thrashed Mwamba 88-20 last weekend.

In the forward pack, Emmanuel Silungi, Jack Adero and Laban Kipsang are expected to start while Bob Muhati, Levy Amunga and Austin Sikutwa will form the backs.

The bankers are going to be without the experienced Vincent Onyala, Samuel Asati, Floyd Wabwire and Festus Shiasi who will be with Shujaa for the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.

KCB last won the Kenya Cup in 2021 when they came from behind to stun Kabras 28-25 in the final at Nandi Bears.

They have gone on a trophy-less run since playing second fiddle to the sugar men.

Mang’eni is confident his charges can go on a good run and end that drought despite being in transition.

“We have come short in the last three years due to various factors but I am confident in the squad we have. We can go all the way this time around,” said Mang’eni.

Following the Nakuru match, Mangeni’s charges will face Thika Road neighbours Blak Blad on January 25 as a litmus test awaits them against title contenders Quins on February 1.

Nakuru are win-less this season and lie tenth on the log with no points.

They will be hoping to kick-start their season with a victory to move away from the relegation zone.
